Bugle is a 2011 British Hunter 20 Fox C, designed by David Thomas and built by Hunter Boats in Southampton.

She is a compact cruising yacht with a particularly useful combination of shallow draft, good accommodation and straightforward handling. Her 2011 build year is confirmed by her Hull Identification Number, GB-LMS45CDBC111.

Finished with a grey hull, she is well suited to a couple or a small family and is considered suitable for two adults and two children.

A road trailer is included, making her a practical proposition for anyone looking for a yacht that can be moved, launched from different locations or stored ashore.

Keel and shallow-water capability

The Hunter 20 Fox uses a twin retractable daggerboard arrangement rather than a conventional centreline keel.

This gives the boat very shallow draft with the boards raised and makes her particularly useful for exploring creeks, estuaries and other shallow-water areas.

It also means there is no large centreboard case running through the middle of the cabin, which helps make the accommodation feel more open than might be expected in a 20-foot yacht.

Rig and sails

Bugle has a good sail wardrobe for a boat of this size:

Bermudan sloop rig
Fully battened mainsail
Furling jib
Jib is understood to be larger than the standard sail
Asymmetric spinnaker
The larger jib should be useful in lighter conditions, while the asymmetric gives an additional option for reaching and downwind sailing.

Engine

Auxiliary power is provided by a Tohatsu 5hp four-stroke outboard, mounted on the stern.

The engine was serviced in 2025.

The stern-mounted outboard keeps things simple and also makes servicing and removal straightforward.

Accommodation

The Hunter 20 Fox C makes very good use of the space available below.

Bugle is suitable for two adults and two children, with a forward sleeping area and additional berths in the saloon.

Features include:

Forward V-berth/double berth
Port and starboard saloon seating
Accommodation for approximately four
Separate enclosed toilet compartment
Chemical toilet
Storage
Opening portlights
Forward hatch for ventilation and natural light
The interior is noticeably open for a yacht of this size, helped by the absence of a conventional centreline keel box.

Galley

Galley equipment includes:

Origo alcohol cooker
Sink
Work surface
Storage
The original freshwater tank has been removed and bottled water is now used aboard.

This keeps the water system simple and avoids unnecessary plumbing and maintenance.

Navigation and electrical equipment

Equipment aboard Bugle includes:

VHF radio
Depth gauge
Speed gauge
Navigation and cabin lights
Older Garmin GPS/chartplotter
Electrical switch panel
The Garmin is an older unit and should be regarded as a useful additional navigation aid rather than a modern primary plotter.

Trailer

A road trailer is included in the sale.

This adds considerably to the usefulness of the boat, particularly for owners who may wish to move between sailing areas, recover the yacht for winter storage or keep her ashore when not in use.

As with any used trailer, a purchaser should check its condition, tyres, brakes and roadworthiness before towing.

Broker's comments

The British Hunter 20 Fox C is a practical and versatile small cruiser, with the added advantage of shallow draft and a trailerable format.

Bugle is well equipped for her size, with a fully battened mainsail, larger furling jib and asymmetric spinnaker, together with a 5hp four-stroke Tohatsu outboard and road trailer.

She would suit a couple looking for a manageable coastal cruiser, or a family wanting a straightforward and economical first yacht with the ability to get into shallower water than many conventional cruising boats of a similar size.
